The motorsport legend found himself trackside to watch the action unfold in Tokyo.
Takuma Sato has had an incredible career in motor racing. He might be known for being a two-time Indy500 winner, or his career in Formula 1, but did you know he holds a special place in Formula E’s history? The 47-year-old took part in the very first Formula E race, almost a decade ago in Beijing! Although he only had one Formula E race start to his name, he managed to score points for the fastest lap and is back in the paddock again almost ten years later.
HISTORY: Looking back through Formula E’s key moments
“It is mega for Formula E, Japan and motorsport in this country – the impact will be huge,” Sato said about the inaugural Tokyo E-Prix taking place this weekend. “There’s no history of street track formula racing in Japan whatsoever and this will bring an enormous future for Japanese motor racing.
“The fans will be really excited to see it for the first time in person. I’ve a lot of good friends here, even after 10 years – it’s been really nice to see them. I’m just so happy to look at a beautiful sunset in Tokyo with Formula E finally coming to Japan – it’s such an exciting moment.”
Sato spent time in the Andretti garage during Free Practice 1, and is one of a host of Japanese stars who wanted to witness this milestone event in Japan.
On Saturday 30 March as Free Practice 2 kicks off the day at 08:00 local, qualifying follows at 10:20 local with lights out on Round 4 at 15:00 local/06:00 UTC.
